You’ll wake up before the sun, when the air in Kigali is still cool and shall depart Kigali at around 4am in the morning. As the city slowly stirs, you’re already on the road—driving north, past terraced hills and banana groves, where the Virunga mountains rise like old gods.

This is not just a journey. It’s a quiet climb toward something ancient, something you can’t quite name yet.

The drive to Volcanoes National Park takes about 2.5 hours. But time folds as the scenery changes. The hills thicken and the scenery even grows greener. Farmers walk with hoes slung over shoulders, children wave from dirt paths.

By the time you reach the park headquarters in Kinigi, the mountains are close enough to touch.
At the briefing center, a quiet excitement hums through the group. Rangers in green uniforms speak softly, assigning visitors to one of the gorilla families hidden somewhere in the forest.

You’re handed a walking stick. You’re told the rules—no loud voices, no flash photos, keep your distance. But what no one tells you is how much this will move you.

Then, with your guide and porters, you begin the trek. Sometimes it’s steep. Sometimes it’s muddy depending on the time of your trek .
